Bernice Young Elementary opened its doors on August 21, 2000 thanks to the
great contribution from a former teacher, Bernice Young Jones. She spent
many happy hours on her family's farm where she was raised. She walked to
school every day and later taught at the Oak Grove School just down the road.
It was her dream for the family farm to someday contribute greatly to the
community of Springdale. This dream was realized when Young Elementary was
built on land that was part of the Young farm. That is why the school is
named for Mrs. Jones.
Young Elementary is decorated in bright primary colors of yellow, red, blue, and green - throughout the halls and classrooms. the 79,000 square-foot building can accommodate 700 students at full capacity. The building contains a mini-gymnasium, a music room, and a large library/media center. Technology will be focused on as an integral part of the curriculum with a computer center in the library, two computer labs and five computers in each classroom. Our teachers consider it their job each day to give their best effort or more in meeting student and curriculum expectations. Young Elementary will follow the district's high standards for each child. It is our hope as we work with each student that they will set their own standards high.
